Ano novo, old habits

a ilha da Utopia

Vi muita gente criticar a Flotilha. Aqui no nosso paízito. Tudo certo. Todos temos liberdade de opinião.

Mas vi sobretudo pessoas que criticavam a Flotilha por levar quem levava na Flotilha. E não era a Sofia Aparício.

Perante o genocídio em curso, o mais grave momento da história da humanidade neste século XXI, houve pessoas (não poucas) que partiram em direcção a Gaza tentando furar o cerco, levando alimentos, medicamentos e o bem mais precioso que possuem: a sua própria pessoa. Enfim, levavam ajuda humanitária. É o que isto era. Porque sabemos que Israel não deixa entrar qualquer camião das Nações Unidas em Gaza. E não deixa ninguém entrar e sair. E porque sabemos (sabemos bem demais) que, a pretexto do atentado de 7 de Outubro, quer aniquilar um povo. E limpá-lo dali para fora. E fazer um resort, a riviera do Médio Oriente (com o padrinho Sam). E não quer testemunhas.

E perante tudo isto, há pessoas que criticam outras porque foram. Porque foram, e porque - aqui é que reside o ponto - são de determinada facção partidária e/ou ideológica. Não interessa se iam em paz, se eram imensas e de tantas nacionalidades, credos e convicções diferentes, se (até) arriscaram a vida, nem se foram atingidos, nem se foram presos e mal tratados. Ou se Israel violou o direito internacional (porque as deteve em águas internacionais). O que importa, para tais pessoas, é quem lá ia, porque, afinal de contas, seria "propaganda". É pena. É pequeno. E é triste que tenham passado ao lado do lugar certo da História. 

Para mim, que não pertenço a partidos, as pessoas da Flotilha foram sobretudo corajosas. E foram solidárias. E demonstraram que "nunca mais" é "nunca mais para toda a gente", deixando claro, again and again, que o governo de Israel faz, e pode, tudo aquilo que quer. Foi esse o legado da Flotilha. Confrontar novamente (nunca será demais) o todo poderoso governo de Netanyahu.

Por isso, ainda bem que tivemos portugueses a navegar o Mediterrâneo. Fico satisfeito, não pelo desfecho (previamente anunciado), mas porque ainda há pessoas, e civis !, que se interessam e mobilizam pelos outros. E arriscam o que têm e saem do conforto da sua liberdade. Para estender uma mão, para mostrarem a outros que não estão sozinhos. Porque num tempo de indiferença e omissão geral, ainda acreditam em Utopias. E isso, hoje mais do que nunca, é fundamental.

Democrats, Unite !

 «"Democrats united": I use this phrase with care. I don't intend it to be an insult, or to imply that the democratic world should become a mirror of the autocratic world. On the contrary, I am using it because I believe the citizens of the United States, and the citizens of the democracies of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, should begin thinking of themselves as linked to one another and to people who share their values inside autocracies too. They need one another, now more than ever, because their democracies are not safe. Nobody's democracy is safe.

Americans, with our long history of imagining ourselves to be exceptional, would do well to remember that our domestic politics have always been connected to, and influenced by, a larger struggle for freedom and the rule of law around the world. Europeans who aspire to a Fortress Europe also need to wake up to the reality that Russian influence campaigns and Chinese commercial interests are already shaping their politics and limiting their choices. We are used to thinking of "the West" influencing the world, but nowadays the influence often runs the other way. Even if we don't believe it or don't acknowledge it, that won't make it go away.

Most Parisians, Madrileños, New Yorkers, and Londoners do not have strong feelings about the political leaders of Russia, China, Iran, and Venezuela. But those rulers pay close attention to what happens in Paris, Madrid, New York, and London. They understand that the language of democracy, anticorruption, and justice - language we often use without thinking about it - poses dangers to their power. They will continue to try to mold our politics and our economics to their advantage, even if we cover our eyes and ears and refuse to notice, as many would prefer.»

As mensagens encontradas mostravam a opinião do cidadão francês acerca das posições do Presidente norte-americano em relação às investigações científicas, conteúdos que para os agentes de imigração norte-americanos “traduzem o ódio contra Trump e podem ser qualificadas como terrorismo”. Os materiais pessoais e profissionais do cientista terão sido confiscados e o homem foi deportado de volta à Europa no dia seguinte.»
